How to face an Interview

On 22nd of June In our PPD session we learnt a very important thing "How to face an Interview" by our Madam.

01.Before Facing Interview

Research the company

 The first thing you should do after you’ve been asked to interview for a position at a company is to research the company. Find out what the mission of the company is, how long it’s been around, how many employees it has, and what your position would be if you got the job.

Prepare to answer common questions

Though each interview is different, there are certain questions that many interviewers commonly ask, and it’s good to have some answers prepared so you don’t look unprepared or caught off guard.

Ex:-“What are your biggest strengths and weakness?”

Prepare to ask at least two questions

 At the end of most interviews, your potential employers will ask you if you have any questions you want to ask them. You should prepare at least a handful of questions and pick the ones that are the most relevant to ask; this shows that you’ve done your research and are excited about the position.

Practice with a friend

 If you want to feel really confident going into that interview, then you may want to practice with a friend or even someone who knows about your field first. This can help you practice stating your answers with confidence, getting the body language down, and feeling secure in what you have to offer.

Prepare to explain why you’d be a good fit for the company

 Another thing you need to get ready to say is why you’d be a great fit for the company. Check out what the employees at the company are like and what the company values the most when it comes to the position you’re seeking; use buzzwords to show why you possess those qualities and why you’d be a perfect fit for the job you’re interviewing for.

Prepare to bring everything you need

 It’s important to get everything you need together the day before you go to the interview so you don’t have to do any last-minute preparation to get ready for the big day. You’ll most likely need to bring your resume and cover letter to use as a reference, as well as any other additional materials that you think will help give your interviewers a better sense of who you are and the work that you do.

Dress professionally

 If you want to make a good impression, then you have to start off by dressing professionally.

Arrive at least 10 minutes early

 Showing up a little bit early to the interview shows that you’re punctual and that you really care about your job.

02.After facing Interview

Avoid sharing overly personal information

 Though you may feel like your interviewers really like you and that they’re getting buddy buddy with you, you should avoid mentioning anything overly personal about yourself. Don’t talk about your significant other, your kids, or your personal problems at home

Make sure to thank your interviewers in person and shake hand strongly 

 When the interview is over, show that you’re grateful for the fact that your interviewers took the time to meet with you and to get a chance to talk to you about your skills and qualifications. As you leave the room, shake your interviewer’s hand

Back the chair where was it

When you leave the room don't forget to keep the chairs in the same place and also carry the drink bottles with you and don't let them away.

STORY WRITING

We were divided into 3 groups and asked to sit facing back to the white board. In each group one of the team members was given a white board marker. Our task was to write a story with a good ending. Each student can write one word at a time. There were four rounds and we were not allowed to talk with the team members. And had to make it quick. So each one had to run to the white board and write a word. We ran to the white board, just read the story and suddenly wrote what we got to our mind.

It was so difficult to predict what the other wanted to say. Even miss Sarasi changed the order of the team members in the last round. At last we got very complicated unbalanced stories which they were funny to read. But no any organization.



 What I realized was it is easy when we develop small sentences. So that we can make a meaningful story. It is really hard to do a group activity without discussing to each other. Different people think in different ways. So it is not easy to work on another one’s plan without discussing or without knowing about the plan. Communication is something very important when we live in the society and work with lots of people.Sometimes we may get half done projects to finish or else we may have to leave with a half done project to another's hand. So what shall we do to make it convenient for others? We should communicate. As software engineers we can leave comments in our codes so that anyone can carryout the work. There should be a method or a common way we declare variables in a project. We have to listen to other’s ideas and choose the best one. Team work is efficient and joyful when we have mutual understanding. 

Mistake that we made:


We all hurry to finish the game first but we didn't carefully read words that wrote earlier. So in our story there were two words that didn't matched and it was the reason that our story missed the continuity.

Lesson from the session:


Without any conversations / less of conversation  with our neighbors, it's very difficult to do a work even a small work, and if  we managed to do it, then it should not be a perfect one. So the healthy and meaning full conversation is very important between us.

PAPER PLANE

Software Engineers became aeronautical engineering

2018/06/01

This is the first activity that we did in our first PPD session in June. All the students of our class were separated into two groups. There were nine members in our group. First what happened was our madam gave 6 yellow papers to our group and 6 blue papers to the other group. The task was, we asked to make planes as much as possible by use those papers and  the other important thing was, after the time out two members of each group wants to throw the planes over the boundary line to get points.

At the beginning we got 5 minutes to plan the strategy and then thirty minutes to execute the plan.So, in the first 5minutes we made a sample plane and threw it for trial and then we started making the planes.At the end, we were able to make only 29 planes while our opponents made 36.

I am and Aashik became pilots 😆,We represented our team and tried to through the planes over the line and first we started badly but after that we realized what we want to do and finally we were able to through planes as much as possible. But Unfortunately the other team beat us.

Mistakes that we realized :

• not everyone took part in making the plane and we were divided into sub groups among ourselves.
• we couldn't make make more planes within the given time although we had papers remaining.
• we made many fouls when throwing the planes amd our planes were wasted.
• The most important is we didn't take the activity seriously.

Lessons we learned at the end of the session :

• while doing some work,our concentration should be in that work.
• being ITpeople ,the most important thing is we have to plan well before starting a project and finish the project within the given time.
• team work and participation is a must in our field.
• learning to get use if the resources available.

On March 8, 2017 of our first year uni life we attended to our first lecture of ppd which is standard for personal progress development. we entered the University of Kelaniya with many dreams. Then we started our academic ability some hard and simple lessons. But we do not believe in something that is in our minds, we are waiting for some good memories, it is a personal progress development (PPD).

During this two years of time period in our ppd journey we could learn a lot. Very first thing that we learnt here was how to do team work.In the whole lecture series of ppd we learnt that how much of strength that we can get by working as a team

In PPD activities,always Ms Sarasi mam tried to convince something to us.We learnt so many things in each of every sessions.

likewise many things we have learnt from PPD.PPD taught us to make ourself more valuable.It is not just a subject.It is really connected to our real lives.

Field Trip

FIELD TRIP

On 2017 December  09th and 10th  as one of the ppd session all the first and second years of Software Engineering students went to  Trincomale Navy Camp. Approximatley 70 students and 3 lecturers went for this wonderful experience.

DAY 01

We started our journey at early morning 3;30 am in our university and their were two buses for our journey. So after some enjoyable time with our friends into the bus we were reached a big lake situated in Kandalai. It was very pretty and then we all stop the buses and take some photographs.

After this nearly at 10;30 am we reached the Navy Camp and we all were very excited to see that place and it was very constructed area with lot of securities and enough facilities.  Then the girls led to their staying rooms and then boys reached their staying rooms and then we all got ready for our progress developments activities. After that we were taken to the lunch and an officer gave a short speech and finally we reached a beach side to begun our activities. 

First activity

The first activity was we were separated into four groups and i was in team Charlie.There is a wood frame were hanged and 8 members have to go from one side to other side without any touching on that frame. So when one of us pass the square other members help to pass the square to him.So we learn how to work as a term through this activity.

Second activity

 The second activity also an interesting to play and this time they asked 8 people from a group without the leader so totally 9 participants from each group and what they did was they gave small PVC plastic and the leader stay front and wants to put the marble into the first person's PVC when the marble touch the PVC only the next person wants to touch his PVC with the other one's. like wise the group wants to pass the marble to the boundary line. We did it nicely and finished game within 5 minutes.

Third activity

Now the Officers gave us a little bit big plastic tube. the both front and rear end were opened and also there were many holes in that tube and they asked us to fill the water by taking from sea. what we did was we asked one of our team member to remove his t-shirt and then he lay down and we kept the tube on his stomach and all we hurry to fill that tube and we all ran to sea and get the water into our mouth and in both hands and ran back and poured the water into the tube. We did our best!!!

Fourth activity

In this game they gave us bricks and each of every one in the team wants to keep the brick in their stomach and the person who in front wants to keep that brick without falling down by pushing it with his back and also the other condition was every one wants to keep their hands on the back side of the head then the group asked to move to the boundary line without fall down any bricks if any brick fall down then the team wanted to start from the beginning. We did with our great effort two times we unknownly failed follow rules but we just nailed it we did'nt made our bricks to fall down had great team work.

Fifth activity

The fifth activity was beach volley ball but a small different. we can't use our hands. So what happened was every group formed their group into three parts with 6 members for each and one of the person wants to stay the other side to catch the ball. the other five wants to stay the other side and four of them wants to hold a cloth like a rubber sheet and the other one wants to keep the volley ball onto the rubber sheet and lead the team and the team wanted to throw the ball using that cloth to the other side and the person who stand on the other side wanted to catch the ball. if it happened correctly then the team will get 1 points. every group got 15 chances to try it and we team Charlie got 7 points.also a nice activity.

Sixth activity

Again a Teamwork game and now we wanted to take participate in Tough of War. So its nothing to say the rules that every one know it and we first tried very very hard and we lost the first team because of over tired.  but we didn't give up and able to take part in the tough of war. That is our success.

Camp fire and Dinner

Near 6pm we return to accommodation and get ready for dinner in formal dress.after that we returned the same place and make a camp fire and do some activities like drama,singing songs and dance.

DAY 02

This is day two. we all got up early in the morning and at 7:30 am we went to take the breakfast which was arranged by the officers.

After we finished the breakfast we were once again separated into three groups and this time an unimaginable activity we had. that is we had a map and a compass and we asked to reached the elephant point by using the map and the compass and its 2.5 km distance. so first the officers taught us how to use the compass and they came for support us. Then we move towards the final destination with our team. when we walked suddenly we saw a person calling us for help  our leader said girls to say there with 3 boys and other boys went their. A man is stucked under tree branch our team mates helped to take them and take them to the hospital (few steps ).officer said gud at work given a positive marks.

After finishing the forest explore we relaxed at beach.after the relaxation we walked to the Naval museum and saw a lot their. The components which were damaged in the time of second world war and in the time of war which happened more the 3 decades in Sri Lanka.

Finally after watched the museum we went to Sniper training center and had our lunch their and thanks the officer for their dedications for us and finally we nearly at 3:30 pm we took bus to university and at 10:30 pm we reached our campus with some unique memories and experiences.
